Brazil unemployment rate hits record low of 5.3% in three months through July

Brazil’s jobless rate dropped to a new low of 5.3% over the three months ending in July. At the same time, the count of people in work reached a fresh high, according to data released on today, 27 of August.

IBGE also noted that 5.3% is the smallest rate seen for a three-month span ending in July since its records started in 2012. Earnings, meanwhile, stayed steady.

Private jobs with formal ties rose to a record 39.4 million. Private jobs without formal ties came to 13.8 million. With both groups added together, private-sector employment reached 53.2 million. Domestic workers totaled 5.4 million. The informality rate was 37.5%, or 38.8 million people.

The labor force, meaning employed plus unemployed people, reached 109.2 million. Average real usual pay from all jobs was estimated at 3,762 reais, or $724. Total labor income climbed to 383.5 billion reais, also a record. As written above, pay levels were fairly steady across most sectors versus the prior three-month period.

PNAD Contínua is Brazil’s main labor market survey. It is done in homes across the country. It gives quarterly figures on jobs, unemployment, and income. It also covers yearly details such as unpaid domestic work, caregiving, and technology use.
